We live in a global community. Where once each group was isolated by constraints of mobility, today we move around the earth as though it were one big neighborhood in which we all must co-exist. But times are changing and where once the doors were open, we are seeing them shut and locked. Welcoming shores begin to barricade themselves, keeping the lands they guard for those deemed the rightful owners of the moment.

Jane Fine is finishing up a productive summer filled with residencies. For the month of June she was at MacDowell Colony. As summer comes to an end, she is processing all that she’s done in the recent months. During her time at MacDowell, she felt the juxtaposition of the cheerful atmosphere at the residency and the state of the larger world. She decided to allow herself to feel the beauty of the place in the knowledge that she would make her way back to the complex issues facing us today. This contrast, she says, brings new perspective to the darker pieces of the present. Chris Bors lives in New York City where he maintains a studio in Park Slope. At the moment he is working on several different types of paintings. He singles out his small abstractions that he calls Post Pop Paintings which feature circles, sometimes with color dripping from them. These paintings began on a white background but now he paints on textured surfaces as well. The evolution has also changed the content of the paintings and in some cases there are no circles. Bors most recent show titled American Jesus was followed by a residency at Mana Contemporary where he further explored the work style from that show.
