This is the Forth free lecture in an introduction to alchemy as an inner voyage of transformation, and a psychological and spiritual quest. The King in Alchemical literature and depth psychology represents the old ruling principle of consciousness which needs to undergo a process of transformation into a new renewed form. Jung said “the king personifies a hypertrophy of the ego which calls for compensation.” In alchemical texts the king submits to a series of processes such as the
mortificatio, solutio, coagulatio, separatio, sublimatio, and conjunctio. Using images by both contemporary and older images by artists, the king will be put through changes which are representative of stages in the life of the psyche. These changes in the life of the individual are also mirrored in the life of the collective. Mary Renault in The King Must Die, describes how the old king is killed and buried in the fields to insure an abundant harvest.
Ann McCoy is a New York-based sculptor, painter, and art critic, and Editor at Large for the Brooklyn Rail.
She was awarded a 2019 John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship. She lectured on art history, the history of projection, and mythology in the graduate design section of the Yale School of Drama until May 2020, and taught in the Art History Department at Barnard College from 1980 through 2000. She studied alchemy with Jung’s main disciple C.A.Maier in Zurich for twenty eight years.
