We do not as a society deal with death other than as a statement of rage in violent films….. now, as mentioned in the lead in re: the great compassion, we are confronting death in slo motion and many are afraid, and need to be reminded of the joy of beauty and parallel evolutions of situations.

The painting is still king, at least economically, and very little media art, if any, is sold at Christie or Sotheby’s. In my experience, media art was more common in the art world than it is today. Is this a good situation and do you expect this to change in the future?

Does the term museum connate too much of a reference to the Cabinet of Curiosities, referring and reminding us of colonialism not only in the collection of ideas but objects as well? Can we develop a new structure, format that reflects an inclusive vision of art and its practice, purpose, form, role for the future? Some museums are getting rid of their education departments, what do you think of this?

Can we create new jobs, roles, valued positions in society where artists will be paid for bringing value, perspective , and problem-solving during pandemics, etc?

This is new tome and I think has potential to serve the desires of the births of the internet itself. Mostly it is about how to do what needs tone accomplished. These collective visual conversations can and will make that happen. Then artist who are mostly in visual, this new thing can facilitate such a critical conversation.

18:49:08   From Charles : Not to be simply contrary, but perhaps there is something wrong with rich art. The same way there is something wrong with the "first responders" so often receiving minimum wage. All human time is equally worthwhile; it is the only measure of what value should be. Product is not value, it is the result of human occupation in time. The time is what needs supporting, not the product. Learning to think this way is the paradigm shift.

There is a necessity to express this and that helps others around them. It takes the art away from the focus on physical presentations in museums and collections that earlier meant importance and success in the artworld.

18:50:23   From Anita Glesta : Anne murray is right. there must be a total redifintion of the structure of the art world that is so much about “ mateship” and club. the elephant in the room is absolutely economic and the fact that this country has no funding for the arts. the inherent capitalist system has created a dog eat dog world and a situation where art has become an investment that is akin to stock market or money laundering. with lack of support for art outside of this, it makes American art in particular, lagging in more experimental media such as new media because there is neither support fir experimentation or earning any money fir work that is more alternative. so, how can money be reconsidered for visual artists in our current depression and will an already bad situation be worsened?

Great American art was given birth from that very question. It was said that great art comes out of poverty. Artists need not aspire to money. Jasper Johns has said important things about that, to say that he has never been a person to establish or effect the value of his work. It is done by others, so that becomes the question…..what about that?

Our work is viewed as something ‘that just happens’ and is taken for granted. Everything outside of nature was designed by someone in the arts.

Our ideas and even recognitions of what art is arise from historical consciousness (not a simple dictation, of course). The point is that the time is crashing and burning: what art is will have to be new within as well as articulating what is arising. Gramsci's general point (to savagely paraphrase): we are in the old world which is dying while the new world is struggling to be born.

19:09:24   From MATTHEW : While I think Instagram is a bit of a refuge for creators and even drive by viewers (see mine), I can’t really believe that it’s anything more than eye candy that is a bit of a sugar coat for the fantasy of selling art. Even tough work on Instagram (and FB, and YouTube, etc.) finds itself on the same plane (the computer screen or worse, the iPhone screen) as Netflix brain candy. I’ve tried to punch a hole in this scenario but fear there’s not much that can be done as the global village descends into mind mush vis a vis this pandemic. WIll my comic strip have much meaning to anyone anywhere? Yo no se. But perhaps David Ross is correct and that connecting to someone for zero compensation is why we are doing what we’re doing. Yo no se.
