Quick case study: Unexpected sales to collectors in an age of selling art online
Published: Fri, 02/05/21
In this age of social distancing, virtual exhibits, and selling art online, I know that a lot of artists miss that personal connection.
For example, one of my students had this to say after a collector bought their fourth piece from her:
===
“Celebrating an unexpected sale. My last painting, "Revelation" is going to Florida, where the collector already has 3 of my paintings. In these artistically quiet times (despite all the online noise), it feels awesome to talk to a collector on the phone and hear their enthusiasm about your work. Old fashioned but, oh, so uplifting!”

===
I want to pose a thought-experiment for you:
What if you could have the best of both worlds?
1. The sale that is shipped from your studio with the full payment already in the bank and
2. The excitement of a conversation with a collector who is thrilled with their purchase?
Because it very much IS possible.
Build a base of collectors for your work online…
And then follow up with them on the phone to close the sale...
Or interact with them face-to-face on a Zoom studio visit, so you can show them some work and also build a relationship that often turns into buying multiple pieces over time.
A Zoom or FaceTime studio visit is fun, but also, as a collector in Praxis Center recently said, “...a visit in person to an artist studio can be awkward, you are coming into the artist space, and there is sense that you are in their private space which makes you feel a bit self conscious. With Zoom studio visits that awkwardness is gone because you both (collector and artist) remain in your own spaces, I like virtual visits”
Isn’t that a fascinating take on doing a studio visit with FaceTime or Zoom on your phone?
This is exactly what I want to teach you on Monday’s free workshop “Sell Online Like a Creative Genius”.
It’s going down on the 8th of February 2021.
You will walk out of this training knowing exactly what it takes to make a sale and how some of the top artists are doing it today so that you can start generating sales online and build a base of collectors in the next 12 months.
Here are some of the strategies I’ll teach you on the webinar:
- A counter-intuitive technique successful artists like Jorge Pardo use to generate sales without having to worry about the constant inner critic that undermines their efforts
- The nuances of pricing (how much and where to put the pricing) — Discover the “price scaling” secret the biggest selling photographer in America, Peter Lik, uses that makes collectors immediately pull out their cheque books
- What never to do when you sell online (This is how reputations are ruined and savings get drained)
- How to communicate with collectors of your work and encourage without “selling” them to buy more (so you can build relationships that continue to buy from you)
- How the most sophisticated artists create automated sales and generate new customers by making a sales funnel (Using this strategy, customers can continually come to you and new relationships are always being built)
- Why you need to teach collectors how to purchase your art so that they can interact with you without any awkwardness (instead of walking away because they were too embarrassed to ask about the price)
