Mathilde Walker-Billaud is a curator from NYC
who focuses on Performance art and literature in the art she exhibits.
Have you ever done a performance or wanted to? Then she is the one to know because she has been doing this for years and is always looking for artists she doesn't know.

Earlier this year, we had the privilege of hosting Mathilde Walker-Billaud at a Praxis Roundtable -- a weekly
Zoom call where Praxis students meet and interact with influential collectors, curators and gallerists.
Here are some highlights from that Roundtable:
- Video 1: She is talking about connecting artists, and how these artists explore themes like interspecies
relationships, society’s future, the treatment of women, and violence. She mentions that these ideas are reflected in the works of Gina Pan, and discusses how the “gift drawings” are used as scores in performance and media work by artists at the Folk Art Museum.
- Video 2: How the vision for the artwork could take
different forms, including songs, dances, and drawings. Some of the drawings appear mysterious and resemble speaking in tongues. The artists have been exploring how these drawings relate to spiritual practices, particularly in relation to shakers who believed in equality and radical thinking about society. The artist group she invited is using these drawings to explore ideas about society and its structure, with a contemporary perspective
- Video 3: She is talking about Cauleen Smith’s interest in Alice Coltrane and how she became fascinated by the gift drawings through her research on Coltrane. The drawings depicted instruments, which inspired Colin to reconstruct them. She also mentions Colin’s interest in spirituality and the practice of spiritual figures, and how this discipline inspires her work.
The gift drawings are being explored as an aesthetic blend of drawing and writing that can inspire alternative views of society.
In summary, she focuses on performance and other time-based art like video and film so if that is even remotely you, then she is the person you need to know more about.
