Dear Artist,
This is not for students. Not for beginners.
This is for you—an artist with an exhibition history, a body of work, and a practice that has matured through experience, not just ambition.
The Guggenheim
Fellowship—$50,000 or so, with no strings attached—is accepting applications from artists who are citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. or Canada.
Every year I work with ten artists on this. Five have received the grant so far. Names you may know: Mary Mattingly. Vicky Sambunaris. Dara Birnbaum.
Another five are waiting. Just like you.
This grant is judged by artists. No gatekeepers in suits, no panels with agendas. Just artists looking at art.
Here’s what Marsia Alexander-Clarke wrote me after she got the call that she won:
“It was a thrilling and wonderful experience to get it. You made some very important recommendations, and the security that you read it and
approved of it was comforting. I think you are doing an incredible job encouraging people.”
If you’d like to work with me on this application, please reply to this email. I’ll walk you through the process and my fee for this.
There are 10 spots available this year. Two are already taken. Eight remain.
The application opens in early August and is due mid-September. The clock is already ticking.
Warmly,
Brainard Carey
