Chiara Ianeselli is
an international curator who has worked on dOCUMENTA twice, as well as the Istanbul Biennial and other major European exhibits. Want to be on her radar for shows like that?

At the start of this year, we had the privilege of hosting Chiara Ianeselli at a Praxis Roundtable -- a weekly Zoom call where Praxis students meet and interact with influential collectors, curators, and
gallerists.
Here are some highlights from that Roundtable:
- Video Clip 1: How to title your work? Titles were historically unnecessary when artworks were created for religious commissions, as the subject matter was
self-evident to the audience. Titles only started being used later, primarily for inventory purposes, and not necessarily by the artists themselves. She examines how titles became a modern practice and highlights the confusion around untitled works or lost titles in museums today.
- Video Clip 2: Will the title
deeply affect how viewers interpret the work (and its monetary value)? For example, reading a title like “Parrot” might influence the viewer to see a parrot in an abstract piece. She also discusses the challenges curators face when titles are changed or when long, complex titles become difficult to recall, disrupting museum practices and inventories.
- Video Clip 3: Should visitors have the choice to experience artworks without titles? How often are labels and titles updated - what are institutional practices around titles? She critiques how titles are sometimes imposed on viewers, which can limit their ability to engage with the work freely, and emphasizes the need for a more thoughtful approach by artists and institutions.
Chiara Ianeselli is an international powerhouse of a curator, so if you want to be talked about as a rising international star, she is the one to listen to and become friends with.
