Earlier this year, we had the privilege of hosting Bruno Alves de Almeida at a Praxis Roundtable -- a weekly Zoom call where Praxis students meet and interact with influential collectors, curators and gallerists.
Here are some highlights from that Roundtable:
- Video Clip 1: The political nature of art, particularly in the context of a biennial exhibition. Art serves as a means to present new perspectives and address urgent societal issues. The works featured in the exhibition are described as political, touching on themes like war, colonization, and displacement. Specific examples include artists
from Sudan and Palestine, who engage with historical and contemporary conflicts. These topics were addressed in a nuanced way, offering multiple interpretations rather than a straightforward political message. The aim is to create an engaging and aesthetically pleasing experience that provokes thought and emotional responses from the audience.
- Video Clip 2: Working with artists in residency programs versus commissioning specific artworks. Their residency lasts 11 months, allowing for deepening relationships and understanding between the artist and the program. He discusses the importance of personal connections, as artists’ work is often intertwined with their life experiences. Bruno acts as a critical peer, providing feedback and support tailored to each artist’s unique
background and needs. The process culminates in a huge exhibition called Open Studios, where artists showcase their new work. In contrast, commissioned projects are more focused and time-bound, emphasizing specific goals for that particular context.
- Video Clip 3: How he engages with artists over time. He
mentions the intensity of being involved from the first meeting through to the project’s completion, facilitating discussions and helping artists refine their ideas. He also explains the logistical challenges of organizing a biennial exhibition within a year, which includes securing funding, partnerships, and managing resources. This time constraint requires a more focused engagement with artists, as the curators need to deliver a substantial project within a limited timeframe, balancing
complexity and artistic freedom.
To summarise: Bruno Alves de Almeida is a biennial director and works at a very prestigious residency program for artists and if you want to know how and why artists get chosen and improve your chances of getting on his radar, he will tell you.
