It’s helpful to remember artists who have changed the world with their actions, and could potentially teach you how to sell a painting a day, on autopilot, without leaving your studio:

Duchamp’s ‘Fountain’ offended even fellow artists, but launched an artistic revolution

Keith Haring turned art into a weapon in the war against AIDS

Paula Rego protested abortion rights in Portugal in a series of powerful pastels

The Guerrilla Girls: Known for their feminist protest art, have fought the lack of recognition and inclusion for women in the art world often withposters like this.

In 60 paintings Jacob Lawrence captured the journeys of millions of African-Americans who left the Jim Crow South in search of better lives elsewhere.

Yayoi Kusama may be celebrated these days for dots & pumpkins. But in the 1960s, at the height of the Vietnam War, she staged actions in New York, counteracting violence with activism in the form of naked body painting happenings and orgiastic love-ins. Her first Anatomic Explosion featuring naked dancers took place on 15 October 1968 opposite the New York Stock Exchange, and was prefaced by a press release that stated, ‘The money made with this stock is enabling the war to continue. We protest this cruel, greedy instrument of the war establishment.’

So how does this relate to selling art online?

Yayoi Kusame wanted to bring your attention to the Vietnam War, Jacob Lawrence  wanted to bring your attention to the Jim Crow South, the Guerilla Girls wanted to bring your attention to the small percentage of women artists in museums,  Paula Rego brought attention to abortion rights, Keith Haring brought attention to the AIDS crisis, and Duchamp brought attention to himself, as 

Quite simply: Attention is the currency of the internet.

First they stop doom scrolling...

Then, they notice YOU.

Then, they want YOU(r art).

Then, they buy from YOU.

Then, they tell their mom, their hairdresser & their dog all about YOU.

(And, of course, their gallerist, their collector friends, and that curator they met at Susan’s brunch last Sunday…)

They *pay* attention.

If you want to sell politicians on change, you need to get voters to *pay* attention.

If you want to sell collectors work, you need to get them to *pay* attention.

And if you want to remain in the studio all day, and make sales on autopilot? 

Then you too need to *pay* attention...
