Would you like to meet Guusje Sanders? She's a curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art, San Diego
Published: Mon, 08/21/23
Sanders is a curator interested in artists whose work relates to the community - and if that’s you she wants to talk.
The Institute of Contemporary Art in San Diego is a museum with a focus on being a “living laboratory of art and ideas”. In other words, a place where you - the artist - can explore ideas you have that can change the way we see art and ourselves.
Earlier this year, we had the privilege of hosting Guusje Sanders at a Praxis Roundtable -- a weekly Zoom call where Praxis students meet and interact with influential collectors, curators and gallerists.
Here are some highlights from that Roundtable:
- Video Clip 1: How Sanders selects artists: by starting with a long list of potential candidates, building relationships, and narrowing down based on how the artist talks about their work and community involvement. She looks for artists who are excited to engage with the community and experiment with their curatorial team.
- Video Clip 2: How this curator forms relationships with artists for potential exhibitions. She looks for artists who can talk about their work and may meet them at exhibition openings. She also vets potential artists for a fit with the museum’s theme for the season and may have conversations and studio visits before deciding. In addition, she also relies on galleries to show her their artists - so gallery representation is
important!
- Video Clip 3: Balancing what society *needs* to hear vs what museum’s donors *don’t want* to hear. Sanders prioritizes challenging conversations and artists with a message. Risk of alienating community is a concern. Finances are left to others: she gets full reign to choose which artists to curate - and then marketing figures out how to get donors on board with her choices.
Would you like to meet her?
As a Praxis member, you can!
- You get access to Guusje’s contact information - as well as the private contact details of 180+ other prestigious collectors, curators and art dealers…
- When you enroll, you get access to the full, 1-hour recording of our Roundtable with Guusje Sanders. The insights Sanders shared will help you connect with her so that she will respond and take interest - because you will know what she is looking for.
- In addition, as a Praxis member you also get to meet a new art world insider like Guusje Sanders every single week, live, at our Praxis Roundtable, which is a Zoom call with a different collector or curator each week…
- You’ll get my assistance to effectively reach out to the movers and shakers you meet at these Roundtables. I’ll give you two letter templates you can use, so that you don’t have to worry about what to say and will have a better chance of getting a response back.
- Best part? You can ask me to personally edit these emails and letters before you send them out to make sure that they are compelling and you don’t get ghosted.
That said, I’m willing to bet that if you ONLY showed up for the weekly Praxis Roundtables over Zoom and met the collectors, curators and dealers that are there, without doing ANYTHING else, you will at the very least 3X your investment right away.
Which is why I offer a money back guarantee if you are not happy.
