Want to meet Diane Brown? She's an American curator and founder of RxART that puts art in hospitals
Published: Wed, 09/27/23
Diane Brown is a visionary curator that founded an organization (RxART) which commissions artists to create art for hospitals that can help children and others feel better when walking into rooms with big scary machinery like MRI Scanners. She is always looking for artists to work with!
A few weeks ago, we had the privilege of hosting Diane Brown at a Praxis Roundtable -- a weekly Zoom call where Praxis students meet and interact with influential collectors, curators and gallerists.
Here are some highlights from that Roundtable:
- Video Clip 1: She is talking about her journey to bring museum-quality art into hospitals to help patients escape emotionally from illness or injury. Initially facing skepticism, she convinced one philanthropist to support her idea. After a successful trial, more hospitals showed interest, although some doubted the motives behind offering the art for free.
- Video Clip 2: She is talking about the growing awareness of the holistic nature of healing in hospitals. Art plays a significant role in creating a cheerful environment, giving patients hope, and reducing the length of hospital stays. While there is increasing interest in art and healing, convincing people was more challenging when she started 23 years ago.
- Video Clip 3. She is talking about the process of commissioning artists for hospital projects. After reaching agreements with hospitals and artists like Jonas Wood, proposals are submitted. Challenges arise when hospital committees offer opinions, but she advocates for artists and emphasizes the educational aspect of their art in healthcare.
As I wrap up this email I want you to take a moment and think really hard about this:
Diana Brown can put your art in a hospital and pay for it - if she likes what you are doing, and then your art is literally making a big difference in countless lives that enter the hospital.
