Korelitz, The Latecomer Do your fears hold you back? It happens to all of us at one point
or another. Something we wish to do becomes a spectre, and we hesitate. Sometimes, if we make the leap, we will find that all our worry was for nought. And other times, we may find that our fears were warranted, but we persevere regardless. Ultimately, life is going to be filled with intensities and easy roads, and we will probably never know which is which until we are in the thick of it. Zoe Pettijohn Schade spoke to us about her show, The Hard Problem, running through June June 17 at Kai Matsumiya. The exhibition features her series of works titled Attempts at Self-Organization. The term “the hard problem” was coined by David Chalmers in his book, The Conscious
Mind, referring to how physical matter can give rise to consciousness. The series title deals with this problem, asking how matter takes up form and how pattern becomes established. Havas spent the last year and a half abroad, during which time she watched a lot of content about self-improvement. Having in the past been dismissive of this kind of content, she decided to approach it with an open-mindedness. The title of this show comes from some of the

Luisa Ziaja is an art historian, curator, university lecturer, and writer. She has been chief curator at the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere Vienna since December 2022 where she was a curator for contemporary art since 2013. In addition she has been co-director of the postgraduate program in exhibition theory and practice ecm – educating / curating /
