How to acquire collectors online and then sell work to them
Published: Fri, 02/03/23
This method is a classic marketing approach that many online businesses use to sell what they have and it can work particularly well for artists selling art.
Here is how it works:
Your goal is to convert as many followers as you have on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram into email address contacts. Then you can sell your work to those contacts after creating a desire in them to own your art.
It begins by creating a Giveaway, which in the case of visual artists means creating an inexpensive print of your art that you announce is being given away.
You can decide what kind of print you are making. You have many possibilities, like creating a print on aluminium or paper or canvas from any image that you have made.
First you make a post on Facebook saying something like:
“Today I launch my new website, and I am going to give away a print of my art to celebrate! Just sign up if you want a chance to have a print of mine for free (including shipping).”
Then you provide a link to a page where visitors can fill in their name and email to be entered in a contest where one person wins a free print.
All of the names that are filled in for the contest get added to your email provider (like MailerLite) to be used at a later date.
This grows your email list and generates interest in your art. All of those that signed up for a free print now want your art – they hope they will win it.
Then after seven or ten days or however long the giveaway is, you announce the winner (on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter) with a photo and even a video if you can of the winner showing it off.
Now you have many new emails on your list of people who wanted to own that print for free but did not get it.
You have created a desire for your work in all of those people that are now on your mailing list, even if it was just a dozen people at first.
The next step is to email all of those people and tell them they can buy the print or other work of yours and you are offering them a 10-percent-off coupon for the next week (or the next three days).
Then these people who wanted a print but didn’t get one, now have the chance to buy one from you, or an original artwork at a discount.
Cliff Notes summary:
- You launch a Giveaway for a print →
- To enter, individuals must enter their email address on a page with a sign up form and you are building a list of people interested in your art by collecting their email →
- Then you announce the giveaway winner →
- Then you email all the other people on your list with a discount code to buy something else from you.
You will have a mailing list that will grow, because on holidays you will announce a new giveaway, and new customers will come on board and new sales will be made as you follow up with these emails.
You could do a giveaway four times a year or more.
HOWEVER… most artists get ONE thing wrong when they set up their funnel, and then the whole marketing architecture collapses on them, burying them under the rubble of no-sales.
And that’s exactly what I want to teach you on Monday’s free workshop “Sell Online Like a Creative Genius”.
It’s going down on Feb 6, 2023 01:00 PM Eastern Time.
You will walk out of this training knowing exactly what it takes to make a sale and how some of the top artists are doing it today so that you can start generating sales online and build a base of collectors in the next 12 months.
Here are some of the strategies I’ll teach you on the webinar:
- A counter-intuitive technique successful artists like Jorge Pardo use to generate sales without having to worry about the constant inner critic that undermines their efforts
- The nuances of pricing (how much and where to put the pricing) — Discover the “price scaling” secret the biggest selling photographer in America, Peter Lik, uses that makes collectors immediately pull out their cheque books
- What never to do when you sell online (This is how reputations are ruined and savings get drained)
- How to communicate with collectors of your work and encourage without “selling” them to buy more (so you can build relationships that continue to buy from you)
- How the most sophisticated artists create automated sales and generate new customers by making a sales funnel (Using this strategy, customers can continually come to you and new relationships are always being built)
- Why you need to teach collectors how to purchase your art so that they can interact with you without any awkwardness (instead of walking away because they were too embarrassed to ask about the price)
